A Bird Story is an indie adventure game developed and published by Freebird Games. It is available for PC, Mac and Linux. It is the second installment of this indie company, being the first one the well-acclaimed To The Moon. A Bird Story takes place in the same universe that To The Moon, but some time before the events of that game.
The story is brilliant even when no words are spoken
Thus, the developers that brought to To The Moon to life, are back with a story in the shape of a game. With a minimalist style, the story tells of a boy who finds an injured bird, and they undertake a journey which blurs the line between what is real and what is unreal. The story has no dialogue since it speaks for itself visually, and it mixes some adventure gameplay with the aesthetic of RPG games.
What is really outstanding about A Bird Story is the soundtrack. It completely guides you through the story and pulls at all the heartstrings. It has references to famous video games such as The Legend of Zelda, and also to TV shows such as Benny Hill. The graphics of this animation are also lovely. The pixel art is simple, but it transmits what the developers wanted, and you will laugh and cry with this touching storyline.
It is worth mentioning that, if you are expecting a videogame with an intense gameplay, maybe this is not the perfect choice to download. You will have almost no interaction with A Bird Story. The actions you can carry out are the minimum; you can guide the main character with the arrows just a couple of times, jump over the puddles with the spacebar when the story allows you, and also throw the paper plane less than five times.
The actions of the player are almost unnecessary. You have no power of decision, and you cannot influence the storyline. The story is what it is, and you are not even free to explore the map or something like that because there is nothing to explore. As a movie or an animation, it would be beautiful, but it is a bit difficult to consider it a videogame because of the lack of interaction that is allowed by the player. The story is brilliant even when no words are spoken. Thanks to the graphics and the soundtrack, you will understand everything without the need of the dialogue. There are fantastic moments that are incredibly lovely and unforgettable, but if you didn't play it, and were just watching it, it would be somewhat the same.
